08/26/2010 SCAM Alert - The criminal activity conducted by the fraudsters recently in our community is known as VISHING. It’s based on one of the latest breakthroughs in telecommunications—Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, which enables telephone calls over the web. VoIP service is fairly inexpensive, making it cheap to make fake calls. Second, because it’s web-based, criminals can use software programs to create phony automated customer service lines and use an automated dialer to call many phone numbers quickly. Also, criminals can mask the number they are calling from, thwarting caller ID.
The lesson to learn from these criminal activities is always be suspicious of any unsolicited request for personal information. If you think the request is legit, you can always hang up and call back using the number provided by the financial institution. In this case we can be reached at (276) 632-1679, (540) 483-0018, or (800) 475-6328 extension 0.

Interestingly, Congress has yet to pass a law that would make it illegal to cause any caller identification service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller identification information ("spoofing") with the intent to defraud or deceive. You can find out more about H.R. 1258: Truth in Caller ID Act of 2010 here.
